I am getting ready to do an upgrade to 5.5j. I currently have a 201 i Version 4.0. The vendor told me it had to be upgraded to 5.0 in order to work with 5.5j or so that was the offical word from Nortel. Not sure about the reasons for the need but we purchased the upgrade for both.
I ran into one of the 40 201i systems that would not upgrade without some Nortel assistance/fixes. I had the PBX upgraded already so there was no option to go back as it was a hospital. The 1.07 201i worked but it is not supported in this configuration. With that said I don't know if all the functionality worked but the voice messaging and menus did work. This was only for a day until Nortel got me the fix.
Upgrading both is a good decision it is cheaper to upgrade in a package like you purchased.
