1) Is there any way to turn off the (*$&%*(&%^ Windows button on the keyboard, or make it so XP doesn't recognize/respond to the signal? I keep hitting it by accident in full-screen games (like Diablo II), which minimizes the game and goes back to the desktop.

2) Is there any way to lengthen the amount of time for intro and outro sounds? I've found some sound files that I used for music in Windows 98, but XP wants to chop it off after 5 seconds or so (one is a Pink Floyd clip that runs about a minute and a half).

Thanks! Jennifer Sigman

Right now, I'm using two very shot files for start-up and shut-down. Whenever I tried to use something longer than about 10 or 15 seconds, it simply gets cut off when XP is going to the desktop or shuts down.

About the link... It says to click "Add Value" under the Edit menu, but there's no such option. The help file you linked to didn't mention Windows XP... is there that much of a difference in the Registry Editor from 2000 to XP?

Thanks, Jennifer Sigman

Try this with the usual precautions of backing up Registry before making changes.

Edit/ New/ Binary Value and Rename it Scancode Map. Right click on Scancode Map and modify binary data to

00000000000000000300000000005BE000005CE000000000

Are you using the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties from Control Panel to change Startup Sound Event? Click on Sounds/ Program Event and highlight event. Browse to your replacement sound event.

Program Events lists the available sound files that you can associate with program events. The sound files listed are typically those files stored in systemroot\media. However, if you have browsed to a different folder and used sounds located in that folder, the Sounds list includes sounds from that folder.
You can search for sound files in other folders by clicking Browse.
Sound files for program events must be in Microsoft WAV format, a file format developed to store and replay sounds on a personal computer. Their names usually include .wav as an extension.

"Is there that much of a difference in the Registry Editor from 2000 to XP?"

In 2000 there is, where there was a functionality difference between the two programs. REGEDT32 was needed to adjust permissions.
There is no difference now. REGEDT32 brings up REGEDIT.

With the sound files... they are *.wav files, and both during start up and shut down they get cut off after 20 - 30 second. The files themselves are fine, I can play the whole thing. It seems to be a thing with XP and a timer, or something. Any clues? I want my computer to sing "A New Machine part 2" when I shut down, durnit! ;-)

How do I back up the registry? *dead brain aura*

Thanks as usual, Jennifer Sigman

linney,

Thanks a ton! I've managed to get the shut-down sound to run... too bad there doesn't seem to be a way to get a longer start-up time. Jennifer Sigman

If you want music at Startup place a sound file in your startup folder and experiment with that.
