I have a report that I need a count for. Displayed on the report is Group Header 1 and Group Header 2. The count should be for each record shown in GH2 within GH1.

For Example:
GH1 - The Arbors
Gh2 - 001
GH2 - 002
GH2 - 003
GF1 - Count = 3

I have been playing around with the Round Total but I havent made much progress.

Just right click on your group #2 field (placed in the detail section) and insert a distinctcount at the group #1 level.

This won't work because in the details are like this:

col1 col2
001 start
001 start
001 start
001 start

002 start
002 close
002 close

003 start
003 close

my gh2 is set up to display the first record in the details which has been sorted by date. I only need to count 1 record that is identified as 'start' for each col1.

Does this make sense?

may be you should use "running Totals" by giving formula for count.

Insert a running total that does a count of the field on change of group #2 and resets on change of group #1. This must be placed in the group #1 footer.

that gives me the same numbers as the first count.

in the running total instead of Evaluate "for every record" give "use a formula" :col2 = "start"

if you want to count only the ones that say start

Then you have set up the running total incorrectly. PLease explain how you set it up. Also please name the fields you are grouping on.

-LB

GH1 = CommName
GH2 = Lot

The problem with the count is that the details in any one specific group may contain this start value that I am looking for however, if it isnt the most recent/current date then I dont want to count it.

When I use a running total set up as:
Field to Summarize - lot
type of summary - distinct count
Evaluate use a formula - {Category} = "START"
Reset - On change of group CommLot

This counts every detail record that is marked start. What i need it to do it count every group that is marked start.

Does this make sense?

You need to sort your records by date descending, and then change the evaluation formula in the running total to:

(
onfirstrecord or
{table.Lot#} <> previous({table.Lot#}) or
{table.CommName} <> previous({table.CommName})
) and
ucase({table.category}) = "START"
