corrupted embedded excel object in word

Corruption does sometimes happen. If it was known exactly why, one presumes it would be fixed
It might be worth extracting it from the document (clicking and dragging to a folder should work) and seeing if you can open it outside of Word.
If that doesn't work you may have lost the workbook. Do you have a backup?
