I caught a damaged ntoskrnl.exe corruption problem and was able to repair it. After I got up and running, I ran SFC to restore any system files.

The problem is when I tried to backup the drive using Windows Ntbackup, it failled and gave me the following log messages:

WARNING: Portions of "\Documents and Settings\Frank\.jedit\activity.log" cannot be read. The backed up data is corrupt or incomplete.
This file will not restore correctly.

Got a bunch of these above. The files listed are in the directory and I can open them fine using Explorer.

Regarding above comments, I have Administrator rights.

When I got the system crash it must have also screwed up some settings. I have a good backup, it's about 2 month old, are their any files I can restore?

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Check your Services and make sure the "Volume Shadow Copy" Service is not disabled, it should be set to manual.

Pick over some of the similar errors in these links.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

GetDataBack can probably give you any data files you need, but you will need to check the files recovered to be sure they are good.

Thanks for the links, I searched thru them and couldn't resolve all my problems. The problem I'm working on is the following:

Could not access portions of directory C:\Program Files\Altova\Setup Files\XMLSPY 2004 Home Edition.

You may not have permission to open the file, or the directory may be missing or damaged.

Is it possible my permissions files are screwed up? The file referenced opens fine, but Ntbackup won't access it. The computer is my personal pc, not password protected and only has one account. This has me stumpted. Does anyone know what files I should check -- thanks,

Could not access portions of directory"

I wonder what portions it is referring to? Have you set Explorer to show Hidden and System files, this might explain why you can open files and NTbackup cannot?

Does XMLSPY 2004 Home Edition support have any knowledge of this problem with NTbackup?

It turns out I have a hard drive that is going bad. I'm going to put in a new one and try again.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,
Frank
