Hi

I have made no changes to my system , but suddenly i get the following message when i start my system or if i
try to start sql server

"your sql server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with (unable to load SQLBOOT.DLL)."

This is on SQl server 2000

THanks

pigsie,

Is this the MSDE desktop edition?

Did (do) you have SQL7 on your computer also?

No this is sql server 2000, i dont re-call having sql 7 on this box but i may haev done a long time ago.

pigsie,

This library lives in the Bin folder of your application.

MS reports that this type of error occurs if you rename the computer AFTER setup of SQL Server.

Are there any Computer ID's that have been changed?

pigsie,

One other thing you might want to try (before a re-installation!!) is replacing the corrupt dll with the original one.
On the original CD, look in:
DEVELOPER\x86\BINN OR ENT\X86\BINN
to find the dll again (this is one of the dll's first copied over during installation and appears to remain original), and then backup your current dll, and then paste the new one in and restart SQL service again.

Hi

THanks i will try your suggestion, but i'm thinking the problem is larger than it appears. I have just noticed that many of the .exe files for many of my programs have dissapeared including office so i'm wondering if not just SQL server related. Out of curiosity irecently installed the .net framework - cold this have any bearing? Also i have not changed my computer name, the name seems to remain the same (keefa) but windows reports the full name as (keefa. +s)/ Sorry if this is steering off topic.
Thanks

pigsie,

No, the installation of .net Framework 1.1 shouldn't affect the SQL Server. I have a laptop with Visual Interdev, Oracle Navigator, SQL Server, ASP.NET (WebMatrix), JBuilder, + complete office and tools, and I have no problems (Just a hint regarding webmatrix. If you install IIS after installing the framework, you have install the framework again!! - ain't Microsoft wonderful?)

This may sound somewhat alarmist, but with a number of .exe files missing, I would look to some rogue program on your system.

Hi

thanks for your help. As the contents of my program files folder seems to automatically halve everyday ( i'm down to 8 out of about 40+) i've decided to break out FDisk as i think i have some virus which managed to sneak past my AV (even though my Av claims my machine is clean and is updated daily)

But thanks anyway
