There was a power failure at the weekend and when I tried to start a Windows 2000 Server, I get 'Stop: OC0000218 {Registry File Failure}. The registry cannot load the hive (file): \systemRoot\system32\config\corrupthive or it's log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent or not writable

I update the Bios to the latest version, tried Last known good configuration - still will not boot

Any got any ideas how I can fix?

Thanks

If this is a DC, then I hope you have a backup or another DC running. If this is a member server, you should be able to retrieve the data (if not backed up) by installing the drives in another PC). Have you tried booting from the CD into a command console and working from there? If a registry file has gone corrupt, that's usually something you can't fix without a backup.

Start, Help. You'll be surprised what's there. A+/MCP/MCSE/MCDBA

It's not a DC, it functions as my ISA Server.

I've tried using the Emergency repair disk, but it cant read the setup.log file that was on the floppy.

I tried using the Repair console, but I dont know the Admin password. I tried resetting the password using a boot floppy, but although it appears to work, it isnt accepting it.

If I reinstall Windows in the same location, will the applications stay intact?

Thanks

Don't know the correct answers to some of your questions but the Repair Console uses the Admin password used when the server was built, not the current one.

That password was setup by someone else before I joined, and is now long gone.

Is there anyway to override that password?

your application will not stay intact, although if you install over the existing installation, all of you data will remain. you will need to reinstall ALL of your programs to restore the registry hives associated with the respective application.

Or restore from your most current backup

You DO have a backup, right??

I have a recent System State backup - would that work if I reinstalled Windows, then restored the System State?

Thanks

have you tried running windows setup again and doing a repair install?
