I have been using Veritas Backup Exec to backup my Exchange5.5 Directory and Information store for the last year without any problems. However, during the past few days the backups have been failing with the following error message in the Veritas backup log.

"The Exchange Store service is not responding. Backup set aborted.
^ ^ ^ ^ ^
WARNING: "Information Store" is a corrupt file.
This file cannot verify."

Any ideas as to why this is happening and what can I do to "uncorrupt" the Information Store?

Thanks in advance.

Terry

It sounds like the Information Store service under NT has got itself into a hung state, and the backup agent can't communicate properly with it. I've had this happen a couple of times in the past.

Restarting the services usually sorts the problem out. However you may find that you get an error when you try to stop the service, that says it can't be controlled in it's current state. In this case you either have to reboot it to force it, or use the NTReskit 'kill' command to kill the store.exe process, but the latter isn't a very clean way of doing it.

I think the 'corrupt file' error is slightly spurious. It's most likely the backup software trying to verify the file after backup, but can't because it hasn't actually backed it up.
