Hi guys,

I have migrated over to a cordless mouse (Logitech Cordless Click with Optical) and I like it a lot. BUT... it uses up batteries like crazy. Once a week I have to replace them. Is this normal? Is there a way to conserve its power or to turn it off when not in active use (which is a large part of it time)? Are rechargeable batteries the only solution?

TIA

Bill

This does sound rather odd Bill.

I run Logitech cordless trackballs at work and home, with an additional (optical) cordless Microsoft mouse at home.

On average I replace the batteries (a well known brand marketed as longer-lasting) at work every 2 to 3 months, and at home every 6 to 7 months. As yet I haven't noticed the optical mouse battery running down any quicker than that in the (non-optical) trackballs.

Does the mouse power-down correctly when not in use (ie not lit) ?

I've got the mx770 and it came with rechargeable batteries... The batteries themselves last about 3 days without recharge, but I usually put them on charge whever I'm not using it, and they charge quite quickly...

It's most likely that your mouse isn't switching itself off when not in use, but frankly I don't see any reason why you don't just use rechargeable batteries...

Thanks for your responses, guys.

TazUk, I don't know how to judge if the mouse is truly "off" with power down. I just now checked, and the light source seems to have two states: bright and dim. When I pick it up to turn it over and look, it goes dim. When I power down it goes dim, but does not go out. Is this how it's supposed to behave? It would seem to me that even with the dim light (in shutown)it would be wasting power.

Thanks for your input.

I've got the cordless mouseman optical, the standby light stays on all the time.
It gets through a pair of quality Alkalines between 5/7weeks
The matching cordless keyboard on the other hand only needs a pair of batteries twice a year.

Hi,
I have the "track ball" version ive only replaced the batteries three times in the 2 years ive had it, and the keyboard has only been replaced twice.
However, a client decided they wanted an optical station, the mouse on it takes batterys as does yours once every fortnight or so.
There seemed to be no "powered down" state, so he ended up removeing the batteries overnight then putting them in again in the morning!
Rechargeables or a new mouse should i suggest!?

On my "ball" mouse, I use rechargable batteries. The main thing is, when I fire up in the morning, I have to lightly tap the mouse on the pad to "wake it up".

I have two that are probably the same type as yours. I use rechargable batteries. Some of the optical and track ball mice will go to sleep after a while, but some are always looking for a signal as is the case with the ones I have. It is a small investment but well worth it.
