I have a 2620 that has two T-1's to the internet on them. I need to setup a 1601 as a backup for just one T-1.

Can I upgrade the IOS on the 1601 to the same IOS that the 2620 is using then copy over the running config from the 2620 to the 1601 and have everthing work all right????

Thanks,

So I assume your moving one of the T's off of the 2620,and over to the new 1601?? What you're saying will work, just be sure that when you download the IOS for your new 1601, you're on the right platform, i.e. 1600, not 2600, and make sure your feature set matches up with what's on the 2600.

By same IOS you do not mean you want to run the 2600 IOS on the 1600? Because, you cannot do that!

However, with that in mind if you are asking if you can upgrade the IOS so the versions are the same 12.1 on 2600 and 12.1 on the 1600. Then yes you can do that, like Fancy said just make sure you put the correct IOS on the Corect platform. Otherwise you are not going to have a functioning router and wind up using xmodem or some such to put a good IOS back on the device. Which, without practice and on production equipment this can be annoying/un-nerving.

I understood you want also to use the same configuration file. Except for the interface addresses I believe most commands are the same. You may use the global configuration, access-lists, etc. In the 2600 you may have interface Ethernet 0/0 while in the 1600 it would be interface Ethernet 0, and the same for serial interfaces.
Not a big deal.

As an employee of a business continuity provider we are requently cludging Cisco configs betwixt the older port numbering scheme and the more recent with no problem. Just tweak the text file and run it in using hyperterminal.
