Copying files to server very slow

We recently upgraded the servers at each of our sites from Windows NT to 2003 Standard Server.

Since then, when our users at one particular site copy a file from their pc to their server, it takes about 50 seconds for a 3MB file. Everyone has 100Mbps connections. It doesn't matter if they use Explorer or save from Excel, etc.

Copying files the other direction - from server to client - happens very, very quickly.

None of our other servers have this issue. We have a single domain, which all machines are a part of.

I've tried the basics: rebooting, new network cable, turned off antivirus software etc.

Can someone give me a few pointers to begin looking deeper? Or direct me to network tools that will help me analyze what's happening when a file is saved to the server?

Thank you in advance,
David Rock

First, check what mode your server is running in. I don't think it would make a huge difference, but still...

Also, check your antivirus config. Is it scanning on reads/writes/both? Some of these virus programs take a while for the 'on-access' scanning. (check both workstation and server)

Is there a policy setup on the server that is throttling incoming connections?

Do you have 2 nics on the server with full-duplexing?

Hmm, interesting dillema you have.

Hope This Helps,

Good Luck!

(I do what I can with what I know)

Although you checked cabling. Check your driver to ensure that it is not running on a duplex/speed setting of automatic. Make sure that both the switch port setting and that of the NIC are in synch. I had a similar issue with a site I upgraded recently whereby we assumed that all switch ports were hardcoded at 100Mbps/Full Duplex. I also had a hard time copying files in this case.
