Does anyone know how to copy a .cab file from a cd to the hard drive directory. I've tried EXPAND using the run command in windows 2000. And I've tried EXTRACT using a windows 98 1E startup disk. I've also tried to just copy it from a true DOS prompt, and from the windows explorer.

Thanks,

Steve

You should be able to create a folder called Win98 then select the cab files on the CD and highlight them and select copy then point to the directory you created and paste.
If doing it in DOS try XCOPY
You do not need to expand the files or extract them just copy the complete file over. Windows can read the files no problems without you trying to expand/extract them.

If you want all the files off your CD onto your hard drive there are quite a few hidden files on the CD.

Before you copy the files open Windows Explorer, click View then Folder Options and select Show All Files. By default Windows hides system file from you.

You can then open the CD in Windows Explorer and select everything in the Win98 (or WinNT if its NT or Win2k) then drag and drop them into a folder on your hard drive.

You can also change your registry to automatically go to that folder whenever Windows needs a CAB file. New Zealand, a great place to visit.

Thanks....

But it's not a Windows 98 CD... It's a Lexmark Drivers CD... and there's a folder with a large .CAB file in it that will not copy to the hard drive in windows explorer.

And I tried in DOS, using a windows 98 startup disk to come to a dos prompt and use expand, extract, xcopy, copy... Is there something wrong with my startup disk, or should this be possible the way I was doing it? And I don't necessarily want to expand all the files onto the hd, I just want the whole 7500 mb .cab driver file copied into the same directory on the hd where it originally was on the cd.

Thanks all,

Steve

Huh?!?! You can't possibly have meant 7500 mb, that's 7.5 GIGS!!
Even if you meant 750 mb, that's still a darn big file. I'm not familiar with Lexmark drivers but I can't believe that whole thing is the driver!
I've never tried copying a file that big, you probably need a ton of RAM to pull it off...

I have seen where the properties of a file are fudged to stop you copying the CD.

Microsoft do this to stop people copying some of their games. They make the CD said its bigger than it really is so your CD burner software says it can't fit on a CD.

I know this is no help to you but it may explain the problem.

Have you tried going to the Lexmark web site and downloading the drivers?? The install program should be able to be expanded out to get the CABs. New Zealand, a great place to visit.

OOOPs,

You're definitely correct. It's not a 7500 MB file, it's a 7500KB file=7.5MB ... My fault.

But yeah, the file is on the Lexmark drivers cd, and I've noticed where I had copied it somehow to the hd before, and found that file intact. So, I should just be able to use that one, ie copy it into the correct directory, etc... Thanks for your help.
