I have the responsibility of getting a users email off the exchange server and copying that data to a disk. How do I get the mailbox data into a format that can then be imported to an email client. I could easily setup the account on a machine and then export the data to a .pst file. While this may be the simplest way I want to leave no room for question as to whether or not the email has been tampered with, such as email deleted and whatnot.

I do not want to load the mailbox on my machine at all if I can help it.

It's Exchange 5.5 SP 4.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My very own LUG!

Unfamilar w/ that tool. Is this integrated into Exchange or a third party app? Google hasnt answered the question for me yet.

Thanks

I'm sorry to call awreneau out, but if you say google cannot help, then you haven't looked. It's the first hit!

Please do not be lazy, if all users were like this then this wonderful website would cease to exists!

the website is

now everybody say it.... THANKS GOOGLE!

Dyadmin, be careful. That link you posted refers to the Exchange 2003 version of ExMerge - see the following note on the page:

MS said:
Note This version of Mailbox Merge should only be run from Exchange Server 2003 or from computers with the Exchange 2003 administrative tools loaded. It can be run against Exchange 5.5, 2000, and 2003

In other words, it's useless for this purpose unless in a mixed 5.5/2003 environment.

If you're pure 5.5, try this link instead:

Actually I did search google. But....I didnt read the post well I searched for EMERGE (like gentoo' package installer" not exmerge.

WHOOPS!!! And thanks for showing me!

Didn't mean to flame, didn't mean to offend.

I have used this tool in a exchange 5.5 /windows 2000 environment and no issues, this is why I suggested that tool.

You should always do what M$ says in their descriptions, but sometimes...*sometimes* you can go outside the box. Zbnet is right in his point to the alternative website.

Thanks for your comments.

Dyadmin

No one said you flamed or offended. I agree with the general tenor of your statements about people needing to do their own research before asking questions in forums such as this.

So you're saying that the 2003 ExMerge works on a 5.5 server? That's interesting. I'll still use the 'official' version on 5.5, though; who knows what 'gotchas' there are hiding under the surface when using the new version on 5.5...!

Thanks zbnet for the validation.. It was just a general feeling that I had to spout about...ah well, moving on!

I used the 2003 version of Exmerge when I thought I couldn't get access to the official 5.5 version. I usually always go with the official version, but at that time I had to make things work and fast. Since using it things appear to be okay, but I have downloaded the official 5.5 version and use it religiously for brick level backup of my mailboxes.

Brick backup... yeuck! Buy a recovery server... or better yet, migrate to Exchange 2K3 :)

thanks very much for the help. I'll give this a shot and see what results I get. One thing I havent learened yet is, when I exmerge this mailstore, will it delete the info from the current server? I want to keep it on the server as well.

Also, I guess what I'm looking for is a tutoria before I go with this blindly. Suggestions?

ExMerge deletes the source info from the store only when you use Archive mode (it isn't the default).

You don't need a demo, it's really easy, wizard-based stuff. The help files are great. Play on your mailbox first. And post back here if you get stuck, there are plenty of ExMerge veterans around.

Hi!
I did not understand what is the OS of the server running your Exchange 5.5, Awreneau.
If you are running it on NT 4.0 server you will not be able to use the 2003 version of ExMerge. You will get the following error:

It works when your Exchange 5.5 is running on Windows 2000 server.
If you are running NT 4.0 you will need the ExMerge version which comes with Backoffice 4.5 Res. Kit and it is a little bit difficult to find it. You can download it from here:

And here is a brief demo how to use it:

Thanks for the info thus far, I'll work on it Monday as I'm off the weekend.

It's Ex 5.5 on win 2000 so I'll try the 2003 ver. first.

Good idea to play w/ my mailbox first, simplest solution escaped me.

I'll let you all know my results.

Thanks again!
