From Windows Explorer (or any other way), if I select a file, right-click on "Copy", go to another location (folder, drive, etc...), and right-click on "Paste", all I get is an error message sound (PLIM!). The file does not get pasted, and an error message is not displayed. I downloaded the microsoft patches KB823980 and KB833330, but they did not resolve the problem. I also ran spybot and adaware on the computer to no avail. I am not sure if this is related to this issue, but this problem started happening after I installed in the computer a Visual Basic application that I wrote and which needs a lot of dlls to be able to talk to Crystal Reports and SQL Server 2000. I uninstalled the application, but the copy/paste problem is still happening. I am starting to feel I little hopeless and would appreciate any help you guys could give me.

Several thoughts:

1. Start, Run, sfc /Scannow

2. Possible as a fix:
Open a new notepad session, to be called IE_fix.cmd, and copy/paste the below:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Msjava.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Browseui.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll

Save the file, then double click IE_fix.cmd and answer the prompts. Ignore any error messages.

Reboot and test again.

3. Possible fix: Reinstall IE. The critical DLLs are from IE and not explorer. Use Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and try a Repair or download and re-apply:

4. Last resort: Do a Repair reinstallation of Win2k
This is the repair operation reached by booting the Win2k CD and going through the Setup menu:

bcastner,

I tried nos. 1 and 2, and it worked like a charm. Thank you so much for your help! I had been looking for a solution to this problem for the past 4 days without any luck. If there is anything I can help you with in the future, just let me know.

Once again, thanks a lot!

Just joined to write a Thank YOU.. Steps 1 & 2 ( with no reboot ).. worked here ( Windows 2000 Advanced Server with Terminal Services ) as well.. < smile >.

Yes, a reboot is not really necessary if the root problem was a failed registration of some critical DLLs.

Thanks all for your nice comments. Glad to see you got the issue sorted.

A lot of the steps above have been included in a little freeware utility by fellow MS-MVP Ramesh, called IEFIX:
