Is it possible to convert a FrameMaker 6.0 file back to 5.5 after accidentally saving a 5.5 file in 6.0 as 6.0? If so, how? If this is the wrong forum to ask, does anyone know where I should go for the answer? Thanks.

Hi Hattery,

In FM6 use Save As...to save the file in MIF format. Then open the MIF file in FM5.5 and save it (in FM5.5 format).

These are the steps I follow. If anyone knows a better method, please say so.

1. Make a new files folder for the FM5 files.
2. If the book contains referenced graphics with relative paths, make a copy of these graphics and create sub-folders if necessary. Then place the copies in the relevant part of the folder structure such that the relative path (with respect to the new files folder) remains the same.
3. Using FM6, open the book.
4. On the File menu, click “Open All Files in Book”.
5. Open the first file in the book. On the File menu, click Save As… (choose “mif”). Save the file to the new directory. By default the file extension is “fm” (not “mif”). Do not change this. Do not change the file name either.
Do this for each file, and for the book itself.
6. Using FM5, open the (mif) book.
7. On the File menu, click “Open All Files in Book”
No “unresolved cross reference” messages should appear.
8. On the File menu, click “Save All Files in Book”
Files are automatically saved in FM5.5 format. You will be prompted for the name of each file. Accept the default names.

Note: Saving all the files in a book can be a bit of a pain because there is no "Save all files in book AS..." command. You can use a freeware plugin from Cudspan for this, but when I tried it it didn't work for all files. (I think the problem might be related to spaces in the file name?)
