hi
i converted access 97 database to access 2000. i am the owner of databse. i have a workgroup information file where i have users and groups in there. after i converted to access 2000 i cant open database if some user opens it at the same time . it says "You do not have exclusive permission to change the design"

i am the owner and the user is not a admin too. so why does it do?

pls help
thank you

From A2000 onwards you must have exclusive access to make design changes.

hi
thank for your reply.
i have exclusive permissions but sometimes the user getos locked he cant even open the database which says i locked the database at the time i am using it or working on it.
do i have to change the workgroup file too or recreate it?

thank you
pls let me know

bye

Hi

In addition to lupins46 clear and concise points:

You are clearly not using the genreally accepted method of splitting your databse into two mdb files.

The First (F)ront (E)nd contails the forms, reports, queries etc, and links to the tables

The second (B)ack (E)nd contains the tables

The BE is located on a Network share

The FE is located on each users Hard drive, and links to the BE

This allows offline changes to the FE, which can be tested on test data etc, without fear of updetting the users data or work flow

The FE would normally include code to check for and relink broken links to the BE tables

hi thanks for your reply/

some users get this message like the system on machine x user y has placed in state of locking.
i cannot make the db into two files. i dont know how to do it either.

is there any other way i can solve this problem by changing the permissions or the ldb file. what exactly should be the permission for the onwer and users.

can owner have exclusive mode opne and users open/read.
what record locking i should use? iam using no locks and checking the option opening database using record locks.
is that correct?

pls let me know

Hi!

Open the Db and go to Tools/Options and on the Advanced tab make sure the default open mode is Shared.

Let me echo Ken's post on FE/BE. Any Db that will be used by multiple people needs to be split. There are many good posts and FAQ's on this site so you should be able to find all you need to know about splitting a Db and taking care of it after it is split.

I don't know how to say this any differently.
Access2000+ requires exclusive access by the developer to get into design view. This means that if there is already a non-developer user in the system then NO-ONE else can open the database for development. If someone already has the database open for development then NO ordinary user can open the database. There is no way round this other than to adopt a different approach to development as spelled out bt Ken Reay.

Hi!

I thought that axslearnr's last post indicated problems with two user opening the Db with neither in design mode. Upon reading it again that may be incorrect. lupins46 is absolutely correct in saying that you must have exclusive access to the database to change anything in design and Access will lock out any other user if one person is in design mode. There is no way around this.

Hi

If you look in your menu bar Microsoft even provide a splitter wizard, look under tools\database utilities

hi
thank you. i did that splitter.b ut now i have a copy of backend database.

how to know which is front end and which is back end and where to put these things

thank you

Hi

Front end is the one with the forms etc in it, as I said in my first post

again as I said in my first post, put the front end on each users C: drive, put the backend on a network share

Use the linked table manager (same menu list) to link the tables

for better effect you need to write code to relink tables, but microsoft provided utility will do for now
