In Access 97. I am trying to parse name field into three fields. For the most part data is in this format in the name field.
Smith, John P

The table has 26000 records. Iknow there are some variations. I think I have seen records where there is 2 spaces between the comma and first name. some do not have middle names or initials.
Have you tried to use the instr function
this function gives you the charcter position of the character you are looking for

instr(0,yourstring," ") i.e. look for the first space from position zero.
