Convert Forest to child domain 2

I have two forests and I would like to demote one of the servers to a child domain and kill the forest (it is a single server domain, single tree forest?). It is currently the correct name, region.domain.com, I would just like to make it part of the domain.com forest.

I am at a loss except for a post here implying that I should use ADMT 2.0 to migrate the users to the domain.com domain, but then what? Or can I uninstall Active directory without loosing the domain and then join the forest?

I would recommend using ADMT to migrate the users to the domain.com domain. Then run dcpromo, remove AD from the region.domain.com, then run dcpromo again, and add the new domain to the forest. Then use ADMT to move the users from domain.com to region.domain.com.

Got a snag to an otherwise perfect plan, neither of my forests are in native mode(required for ADMT to work). There are still a few NT servers that we have trusts with, though they are their own domains. Any thoughts?

This is one of those times that I wish I kept my MCSE AD book at work, cause it's got the info I can't remember in it.

I'm not sure, you'll want to check online first, but I didn't think that you needed to keep the functional level low in order to trust an NT4 domain. Again I'm not 100% on this. I beleive that a 2003 native domain/forest can trust a NT4 domain.

Unfornitually a quick google search didn't help much. I'll try to remember to bring in my AD book tomorrow. I beleive that it covers stuff like this specifically.

Interoperability (or lack ther of) is the closest term I can find to describe NT and 2003 AD. If the trusts can work between 2003 AD Native and NT I would be happy. The NT domains are seperated and do not need to be in the forest, they represent different regions. If you have the info, that would be great to confirm the theory.

awalter....

you need to be in interim mode for NT servers to be bdc...

but you don't need it to trust external domains...
the NT domains are not part of your AD forest ??
if it's the case, you case raise your functional level w/o losing trust capacity...

aftertaf I'm glad you confirmed that. In my morning rush I forgot to grab my AD book.
