Control Panel load is excruciatingly slow

I'm running Windows 2000 Professional. Any time I open my control panel, it takes about 3 minutes to open. No exaggerration, really 3 minutes. There's no hour glass or anything, but in the time that the control panel is loading I cannot do anything with any other programs. It's like you click and it seems that nothing is happening, since there is no hour glass, but you can't do anything else because it's processing. Then, several minutes later, the control panel finally opens. Thing is, I've created a shortcut to Component Services, which is in the control panel, and when I click the Component Services shortcut on my desktop, it loads quickly without any problems. This has only started happening recently but I cannot tie it back to some particular action that I took that caused it.

Has anybody seen this or know how to fix it? It's quite frustrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
