From the Chairman of J4, and the COBOL working group (WG4):

Call for Papers

Members of the COBOL standards community (INCITS/J4 and ISO/IEC
JTC1/SC22/WG4) together with COBOL Expo 2003 would like to know what your
vision is for the COBOL language 5 years from now. There will be a
workshop on Wednesday June 25, 2003 at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas
(UNLV).

Special topics of interest include, but are not limited to, immediate
needs like XML and future ones like asynchronous processing and a
macro/template facility.

Papers must be sent by April 30, 2003 to Don.Schricker@microfocus.com.
Papers may be submitted electronically in Word, PDF, or HTML format. For
other formats, check with Don Schricker.

Relevant technical papers will be available on the web. Time may not
permit presentations at the workshop on all the papers submitted. Those
who are chosen to present their papers will be notified by Friday May 23,
2003.

Everyone is encouraged to attend the presentations at the workshop on June
25, 2003 of the selected papers.

All submitted papers must contain the following:

Paper title: ____________________

The submitter (hereinafter the "Author"), desiring that the paper
identified above (hereinafter the "Paper") be presented at COBOL Expo 2003
and appear on the INCITS/J4 web site with other submitted papers, hereby
grants non-exclusive permission to INCITS/J4 to distribute the Paper, or
portions thereof, at COBOL Expo 2003, to publish the Paper on the web, and
to use the Paper as the basis for part of a COBOL standard or technical
report.

The Author retains copyright, right to transfer the copyright to other
parties in the future, right to use any and all portions of the Paper in
future publications by Author.

The Author warrants that he/she is the author and/or proprietor of the

does not infringe any copyright, trademark, or patent; and that he/she has
not granted or assigned any right on the Paper to any person or entity
that would interfere with this grant of permission.

There is no future for COBOL.

"There is no future for COBOL" for Gazolba, but anyone else whom is taking COBOL as a serious programming language, can earn a living with it. Bye bye Gazolba!

It might be interesting to get versions of COBOL that work with Microsoft ".NET".

As far as the future of COBOL, I can not see it disappearing anytime soon. It is just cheaper to use COBOL compared to converting to a database system. Some things work better in COBOL. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

I believe the latest version of Microfocus COBOL Net Express works with MIcro Soft .NET.

Does anyone out there have any experience with it?

.Net environment is a new life cicle for cobol and Fujitsu Software is the only one in the market that support Microsoft .Net.
Some time ago i read in a forum a thread where a programmer (about 50/56 years old), told that cobol should be died before the year 2030, because of his age calculation...
In part i agree about this valutation and in part not.
It is depending from the future...What it will reserve to us?

As i mentioned above, i think that .Net will give new lymph to cobol language..
