A few days ago I say a web store that has, for some items, a dropdown list from which you are required to make a selection. The label for the dropdown list? Mandatory Option

How about labeling the dropdown thusly:

Size
(required)

Rod Knowlton

CompTIA Linux+
CompTIA Security+

 
Makes sense to me. That's the way I would have done it in the first place.

As for mandatory option, it strikes me as semantic abbreviation rather than oxymoron, in that option is not defined here as a single non-mandatory choice, but rather a set of choices one of which must be made.
