continuing virus filled mail 2

I received an e-mail from "big@boss.com" some time ago which contained no text, just a virus, which Norton picked up straight away. OK. This happened again a few days later, so I added the above address to my Blocked Senders list. NO GOOD. The messages still get through from the SAME address. It is serious now as although Norton continues to identify the virus, today it offered to quarantine it but it failed so offered to delete it. This also failed and Norton Antivirus warned me that it had been unable to delete the infected file. I run live update continualy so I have the latest virus definitions. What can I do ? Why doesn't my blocked senders list block this malicious sender ?

May I also say that I don't know who or what this big@boss is. I had never heard of them at all until this influx of mail started. I do have a website that broadcasts my e-mail address and presume that is where they got my address from.

The text that you see displayed isn't neccessarily the actual 'from' address. Assuming that we're talking about OE client, with the message open or in the preview pane, press CTRL+F3 to view the source. In here you will probably see a different 'from' address. It may say 'envelope from' or something like that.

I would also suggest you take Norton antivirus off and install a trial version of NOD32 from

http://www.nod32.com.au.

You will be surprised at the difference adn you may well find your system is still infected by other viruses not picked up by Norton. Most systems I have repaired (software wise) over the last 12 months have been Norton antivirus related. I have lost count of the number of systems infected with well known viruses and Norton has been happy to ignore them.

NOD32 is also the only antivirus software to not miss a single virus in the past 12 months.

The bottom line is popular is not necessarily best.

First of all, appologies for the delay in getting back to you all. My server has been experiencing problems and I have received no e-mails in the last 24 hours and couldn't access any web pages.

Smah, I see what you mean. I will do as you say in future (CTRL + F3)

Forecoms, I have d/l NOD32 and will try immediately. Thanks for the link. Surprised to hear of Norton's approach to these matters !

jmatt. Thanks for the tip. I can already view my mail from my servers home page.

ALL. I forgot to mention another type of spam mail I've been getting. One where there is NO NAME in the &quot;from&quot; box, just &quot;<>&quot;. If I try to add to the blocked senders list, I get an error message to say that it can't add it because it don't know who it's from !!!!!
I guess that CTRL + F3 will give me the details ? Right ??

thread616-448982 posts a few others, but AVG is very good indeed, just put the update frequency to every day instead of the default, and even then, try to update it manually from time to time, in case the PC was off at the set time. It was the &quot;sobig&quot; virus. Symantec have a program which removes the virus. It can be found here.

So far for Norton, if you need to rely on manually tracking it down and get a tool 'from their owns site', sad ... very sad

I have found that when I run one of those Tools mentioned above, it says &quot;The XXXX Virus was not found on your system&quot;. Assume this means cleaned or deleted the files.

I run VET on the infected machine and it finds more files that are still infected!

In saying all that, every few days I do go to the Symantec site to check for warnings about viruses, and details about each virus. Much more informative than the VET site.
