I don't know what I did, but when I right-click a file (.doc, .txt, .ini, .rft - almost any), when I select the "Choose Program ..." option, notepad opens the document. In other words, I don't get a choose program dialog, but document opens in notepad.

How can I get the dialog back? Where is the "Choose Program ..." option in the registry? Or is it a problem with the shell32.dll library?

Many thanks in advance.

The following switches the feature on. If you delete the key then it will stop happening.

Easily Use Notepad to Open a File (Windows 9x and NT)
Enabling this setting will allow you to use Notepad to open a file by simply right clicking on the icon. Also the Notepad will be used to open the files by default if no association already exists.
Open your registry and find the key "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell", if it doesn't already exist then create it.

Under shell create a new key called open, and edit the string "(Default)" to read "Open With Notepad".

Under open create a new key called command, and edit the string "(Default)" to read "notepad.exe %1".

Now when you right click on a file you should see "Open with Notepad" as one of the options.

Any feed back is appreciated.

And remember if it doesn't work just flush it down the toilet. [Flush]

Thanks, but that's not exactly my problem. In the right-click Open With context menu, the "Choose Program ..." choice now launches notepad rather than opening the choose program dialog.
