Hello all.

We have a small business network with a cisco 2611 router with a DSL connection. Every couple of days, our internet connection will be down. We used to just wait and it would restore itself after a few hours. But as I was reconfiguring the router a few weeks ago, I realized I could reboot / reload the router and the connection would be restored.

The biggest time this is a problem is on Monday mornings when we get to work and it has set for a few days not used it seems. I don't know if SW bell is messing with the DSL connection, if we have a bad connection, if DSL is just not 100% reliable, or if this is a router issue.

My question is: Is there a way I can set the router up to ping an outside address, say three times in 45 seconds every 4-8 hours, and if there is no response, then reload itself?

Is there a built in program or a better way to do this?

thanks in advance.

Answer to your question on this cisco router is no.... However, it seems like your router might be running out of memory or something like that. Is there a way for you to log into the router and grab the output of "Show logging" when the DSL is down.

Yes, I can telnet into it from inside when it is down.

Here is what it shows now but the DSL is currently UP!

Cisco2611>enable
Password:
Cisco2611#show logging
Syslog logging: enabled (0 messages dropped, 0 flushes, 0 overruns)
Console logging: level debugging, 6 messages logged
Monitor logging: level debugging, 0 messages logged
Buffer logging: disabled
Trap logging: level informational, 10 message lines logged
Cisco2611#

What is it that I am actually looking for if it were a memory issue? Would show logging show me that it is a memory problem?

thanks.

Well... The router would log different messages if it was running out of memory.

Check out to see if the interface is up, if the memory is full, if the CPU utilization is high, and check the logs.

Issue these commands the next time your DSL is down.

show logging
show process cpu
show memory
show interface (dslinterface) <--- Replace w/ the dsl interface

ok. i will try it next time it goes down, and report back the replies.

thanks.
