We have a problem with 3 brand new catalyst 4948 (IOS 12.2(20)EWA

We are not using IP routing, and have therefore used the "IP default-gateway" command. This appears to accept, however 2 things are still absent:-

"Show Ip Route" results in "No default route" and the "IP Classless" command is both absent from the running configuration, and not selectable in configuration mode(IOS command set).

The result is that the switch can only be pinged/managed from another device within the same VLAN as
the switch itself. Devices connected to the switch can be accessed through it, as they have had the default gateway manually configured within their own IP stack.

Any ideas what the problem is???

many thanks in advance
Matt

try ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 <your next hop IP in the management VLAN>

Thanks for the reply.

I actually found the fault to be that as the 4948 is L3 capable Cisco enable IP routing by default although it does not show in the config. Applied "No IP Routing" and all ok now...

Thanks again for the reply
Matt
