Hi Guys
I’m trying to install NW5.1 server. Although the server appears to install ok, I am unable to connect to it through the NW client. I am using the 4.83Sp2e client on XP Pro workstations. I have tried Pinging the server from each workstation, each replies with no problems.
Originally I was using IPX in Netware 4.1 with no problems; however I have recently purchased NW5.1 incorporating IP!! And have attempted to set up this server using IP. I think the problem is, I am currently using a broadband router which incorporates DHCP to access the Internet. Each of my workstations is setup to obtain an IP Address automatically from this router. Could this be the problem..? Is there a way that I can have my router specify the IP Address to the server as it does the workstations..? At present I have specified the IP Address and Subnet on the server, as well as the Gateway address. Is that the correct way..? If I do need to change the IP Address on the server How do I do this in NW5.1..
Thanks for the help Guys!!!!!

try manually mapping to the server by it's ip address.

like this: \\132.35.15.24\sys

if that doesn't work it means you probably have a problem with your IP Addressing.

Don't set your server up to get a DHCP address. It's better to use static.

Hi Marvhuffaker thanks for replying,
I have just attempted what you suggested, mapping to the server using the IP Address. Yeah, you guessed right. It doesn’t work. The error message states “The Network Path could not be Found.” I am however able to ping the address!
Any further Ideas..?

I can't think of a reason why your router would cause a problem unless you've got a duplicate ip address on your network. For example, the DHCP on the router gives out 192.168.0.5 to a workstation, and you've also assigned the server to 192.168.0.5.

Also, being able to ping the server doesn't necessarily mean all is good with IP or the server. It just means that a "host" on your network replied to it's icmp packet. Going back to my first paragraph, it doesn't tell you if it is the right host.

My recommendation is to try and get everything working with IPX.. Make sure IPX is bound on the server as well as the workstation client. If you still have problems with an IPX connection then you need to figure out what is going wrong on the server and resolve. Once you get the server so it is fully functional with IPX, you should be able to also use IP to connect from your workstation.

I have now configured both the Server and Client with IPX, and all is working well. Before I reconfigured the server protocol I verified that there were no duplicate IP Addresses. Now is there a way to be able to reassign IP..?
Thanks!!
