I recently obtained cable modem thru AOL/Time Warner. Set up a router and hooked up 4 ibm PII-266, all work fine. Tried to replace one pc with an HP PII-266, all running win98se, and can't connect. Rebooted/reset router, rebooted/reset cable modem, reinstalled win98se, aol v 8.0 and ie 6, nothing changes. renewed winipcfg settings, etc. Also went thru setups with aol, time warner, and speedstream (router) twice each.
No difference if I remove router and connect directly to modem. I can ping my isp, with router in place I can ping other machines on network and viceversa. The loopback will also ping at 127.0.0.1. IP address in winipcfg shows as 192.168.254.7, first 4 machines show as 192.168.254.1, ..2, ...3 and ...4. Am I beyond a range setting somewhere? How does the IP get assigned? All other settings have been triple checked from one machine to the others, can't find any differences other than the last digit of ip address and can't find it in settings anywhere to change it manually or otherwise. Would it work as .1 or .2 instead of .7?
