i have a netware 4.11 server and i have questions regarding my licenses.
problem is, i have 75 user licenses,
94 active connections listed,
but only 69 current licensed connections

Do Novell printers count as Novell licenses?
on the console monitor, the asterisk beside a username, what does that mean?
the "not-logged-in" listed, is that taking up licenses too?

thanks in advance!

Do Novell printers count as Novell licenses?
Depends. If it is a remote printer or a locally connected printer, no it does not take a license. If it is a print server servicing a queue (like an HP JetDirect print server) then yes, it does take a user connection license.

on the console monitor, the asterisk beside a username, what does that mean?
The asterisk means "authenitcated" Your logged into the tree, but not connected to the server (no access to the volumes). No asterisk means "connected" to the server(access to the volumes). You should see all "connected" users with both an asterisk for their authentication to the tree and another with no asterisk for their connection to the server.

the "not-logged-in" listed, is that taking up licenses too?
No

thanks for the quick reply...
however, some of my users are getting the "Policy Manager Connection# is using a grace connection in Server Dmi because no licenses are installed or available"

how do you turn this off? i know you can turn off broadcast messages on the advance properties of the Novell Client but how about PCs with Microsoft's Client Service for NetWare?

which is better? make users log on to the Novell Server only? or only to the tree? right now, i have them logged on the tree...

Just a couple quick thoughts....

-- How many printers? It is possible that you are exceeding the licence count if my math is correct 69+x=75. This would leave 6 available licenses. 3-4 printers and it's almost there. A couple of connections that stuck or somehow haven't been released by Novell and you're done.

-- You could try a DSREPAIR -N0 (that's a ZERO). run a normal unattended repair. This will clear any net addresses that are somehow stuck in NDS. I've used it before to clear workstations that were restricted to one login, and the users couldn't login because the server thought they were already logged in. check to understand the switch.

It's possible that my logic is flawed, but it's worth a shot. No harm done if it doesn't work.

thanks!
but will this work on Netware 4.11? i tried to enter this on the command prompt and i get an unknown command message.

With NetWare 4.x, you have to type LOAD before loading any NLMs. On NetWare 5.x and 6.x, you do not need the LOAD command:

LOAD DSREPAIR -N0

hi! thanks again for the reply...i have performed dsrepair and completed successfully

however,
i still see some users on the active connections even though i know they have logged off...besides restarting the server, is there any command i can use to release licenses?
