I'm new to linux world. After I finished installing the linux 9(with server option), it says now my localhost has an IP of
127.0.0.1. But I cannot connect to the outside world right now unlike my other windows platform-based computers.

I may not say this correctly but I need to reconfigure it so that it becomes something like 198.166.0.174 (an IP range is recognized by by D-Link router). This I think will enable it to access the internet.

Basically, how do I configure my Linux 9 server to connect to the internet using my current cable-based connection modem.

How do I go about reserving an IP so I can access the web server from the internet?

thank you

ok, first of all, it's not "linux 9" but most probably "Redhat 9" which uses a 2.4 linux kernel. Linux is a kernel, with a bunch of applications put around it.

The localhost (127.0.0.1) address is present on any type of computer that can understand ipv4 addressing, because it's a local loopback address ( aka it's used to connect to your own computer ) .

Does your router do DHCP ? In that case, configure your network card to be configured by DHCP and you will be able to connect to your router ( and to the internet ).

thanks. yup, it is redhat 9. you're right.

Yes, my router uses DHCP.

what do you mean when you say "configure your network card to be configured by DHCP"? I have a d-link 713 router and all the MAC addresses for my windows based pcs are being set accordingly. But all their ips, i.e. when I do ipconfig at the command prompt in windows environment, are within the 192.168.... range.

Q:
This might not be the right Q but Do I have to make the
ip for the linux server to be in that range too?

thanks
