I configured a PC at work for strictly Internet purposes and the user account I have setup is for the PC only (no logging into the domain). It connects to the Internet via our LAN, but I would like to also print to a LAN printer. Do I have to set up a port on the local machine in order to do this. I added the LAN printer but I am unable to print ussing the local administrator account.

. Client for Microsoft Networking, File and Printer Sharing, and under TCP/IP properties, Advanced, WINS tab, Netbios over TCP/IP are all enabled.

. Make sure that the username and password are entered as Domain members.

. Leave the machine set to a Workgroup configuration.

. Now use the Add Printer wizard.

Interesting...

Thoughts:

This is a network printer. It has an IP address determined by a network that you are not a part of. Without network authentication, your print server isn't gonna let you near it.

I would try to install the printer's software and drivers directly on the PC in question, and see if it's able to hit the printer that way (maybe by MAC address?).

I have no idea how the printer will react to this situation, depends on how smart it is.

I will see if I am able to add a local printer, install the LAN printer drivers then change the port to the shared LAN port the printer is using. Sounds like it makes sense-will check it out. thanks all.

Wait a second here. There are no special tricks required to use a Domain resource:

1. You follow the configuration steps I outlined above;
2 You use a Workgroup name on the machine that is identical to the Domain name;
3. You have a valid Domain username and password;
4. You create a local user account with the identical username and password as used on a Domain logon.
5. You logon locally
6. Hit Network Places. Your domain shares, including printers, will appear
7. Use the printer wizard and add the network printer.

These steps handle intranet communications issues, permissions, and access to Domain resources.
