I'm completely new to servers / networking.

ON THE SERVER :
I've just set up a compaq 5500 server with NT4.0 using the compaq smartstart cd. Next, I Installed SP/4 from CD.

I Set the server up as "primary domain controler" with a domain name of "Treeland", set up TCP/IP, used IP address of 172.16.1.100 with a subnet of 255.0.0.0.

Have a d-link "switch" which I connected to the server nic with a regular cat 5 cable, I get a green light on the switch for that port and ran all the compaq NIC diagnostics which ran fine.

I added a "user" using the "User manager for domains", added the user name "PAUL2" (did not set up a "profile", just added user name and password)

ON MY LAPTOP (running windows 98) :

I connected my laptop to the d-link switch, get a green light indicating 100 mb connection.

configured the laptop nic to use an assigned IP address of 10.10.10.5 with subnet of 255.0.0.0 with TCP/IP protocol

checked the box for "log onto windows NT Domain" in the "client for microsoft networks" window,

set the Windows NT domain as "Treeland" (same name as server domain name),

Set the "Computer Name" on the identificatin tab as PAUL2 and the workgroup as "TREELAND".

Restarted laptop, got network logon prompt.

When i key in the password and hit enter, i see the lights on the d-link switch for both the server and the laptop blinking for a few seconds but then I get a message "Nop Domain Server was Available to validate your password...." message.

Is there something that I am overlooking on the setup of the server?

I have a compaq presario desktop running XP which i have been able to network to the laptop through the dlink switch using TCP/IP successfully, now I am trying to add the NT server to the network (have not been able to figure out how to connect to NT4.0 with the XP desktop because i see no options for logging onto NT in the Network setup in XP so am just focusing on the windows 98 machine at this point)

Any help would be much appreciated.

Paul

Haven't you got an IP address range compatibility problem?
