I have win98 running hhproxy which when win nt or win 98 connects can go though and connect to the web ok. But I am trying to get linux to connect though but won't have it I can get traceroute to work and time things, well I think it's working. Anyway I get problems getting though, Redhat 6 and netscape 4, anyone any ideas???<br>

Buy the way I know this is a strange way of doing things but i am on a tight budget as i work for a youth club and the only money we get is fund raising!

hmmm... I *know* what a tight budget is.....the only way I get money is by working @ Taco Bell (try $500-$700/month to live on & build a new computer system). But, as for a suggestion, are you sure you have PPP and your TCP/IP stack properly configured for the proxy server?<br>

What sort of problems are you having getting through? You say traceroute seems to work - it might be helpful if you could post output from a traceroute on the linux box.<br>
<br>
Can you ping servers on the net from the Linux box? (ping slashdot.org)<br>
<br>
Are your proxy settings OK in Netscape on the Linux box? (Edit-&gt;Preferences-&gt;Advanced-&gt;Proxies)<br>
<br>
Have you set up the Win98 box to be the default gateway for the Linux box? (see 'man route')<br>
<br>
Try these for a start. :)

Thank u for your sugesstions, I found that by placing the proxy in the hosts file netscape would then connect though ok! <br>
<br>
ping did work after putting the proxy in the hosts file, netscape did have the settings for the proxy. At first I put the name of the proxy sever in it's setting, but then changed it and put the I.P. address in this seems to speed the access times up by about a second per transfer, because it's not looking for the I.P. address for every access.<br>
<br>
The proxy address is 192.168.0.1 then every P.C. connected gets an I.P. address in one up etc.. Port 8080 is for http and ftp is on 2121, socks 1080, telnet 23, I use cable & wireless and they have a proxy server for the internet so I use port 7000 to get to the proxy so real audio works.<br>
<br>
I also have ports 1090, 7070, 8000, 110, 25, open for access so most stuff works. <br>

What I carn't get working is navigator, java seems to colapse, this is an error on nav 4.0x but it is not documented for 4.6 or 4.61 which is the versions I am using. Anyone have any info on this !!!

I have found that installing the netscape version 4.61 for Linux does not include some of the needed plug-ins for netscape (java40.jar I think) I'm sorry, but I haven't spent alot of time finding out why, I have merely gone to my linux distribution and installed the rpm that comes with RH6.0. It is packaged with everything.

I have got java40.jar, and it is only when java starts that it falls over this is a documented error in 4.06 but not in 4.6?

HI
u have install and configure proxy for your linux machine. the best proxy server for ur linux bos is squid.
After downloading the installing the squid u have to do only one thing and that is
1) edit the /etc/squid/squid.conf file and add the line
http_access allow all
below the HTTP tag.
bydefault it is set to deny.
(NOTE: u should write that line before the http_access deny all line)
and then give the ip address of linux machine to your client systems as proxy server and port as 3128. in linux http requests are listen at port no. 3128.

bye
