connecting 2 PCs

hi all, i have 2 notebooks and i want to transfer some files from one to the other using cross cable. Machine A is running XP Home and Machine B in on XP Professional. I am having trouble accessing/logging the machine. i usually go to "my network Places" and then serch for a PC" but it come up with a login box where i have to key in user name and passwd but i don't know how what to key in. please help. cheers!

You enter a valid username and password for the other machine, for example the login that you select at system startup, and its associated password.

Just make the same username and password on both machines. Then set up a directory you can move the documents to so you can share that directory. Then copy all the documents to that directory. Enable file sharing for that directory.

One problem that may arise is if you have special settings for networking on one machine that you use at work that may cause problems for you.

If you had a USB flash drive you might be able to just move files if they are small enough. Keep in mind a crossover cable is not very stable. I do not really recommend a crossover cable. A hub, switch or a router and 2 normal CAT-4 patch cables would work a lot better.

Normally when you set up a directory to share, windows by default asks for you to use a password for the directory. Sometimes this password must be known too. However, I think you could disable sharing for the directory and reenable it and set a new password.

How are you connecting the two computers? If it is a straight connection (i.e. not through a router) then you will need "cross-over" network cable. This is different from the usual "straight-thru" cable. "Cross-over" cable allows for simple peer-to-peer communication.

The file size was over 4Gb and using thumbdrive would take up time. i managed to do it but i initially had to set up a "guest" account in the machine running Win XP Proffessional and then log into that machine using that account. Thanks again guys for ya assitance.
