I downloaded 'SQL Server 2005 Express April CTP'.
I'm almost a beginner of SQL Server.
I attempted the initial connection in the opening dialogue of SQL Express Manager. but in vain.
Error Message says, "Cannot connect to [Server Instance's name]", and then
"Additional Imformation: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding (Microsoft SQL Server)"

Several hours have already passed left it unsolved. reading repeatedly 'Getting Started with SQL Server 2005 Books Online'.

As is a basical question, can '' be named unrelevant to other items such as a user name and Server name. just in the connection dialogue?

What and How should I do?
Please imform me of them.

I've never played with the Express version, but I'll give helping you a shot.

What OS did you install it on? Did it give you a choice between installing a default instance or a named instance?

What are you opening that gives you this error message?

This really was a pain in ... It took me more than an hour to figure it out.

In the connect to server you have to:
1- choose windows authentification
2- as the server instance you have to enter:
the name of your computer \SQLExpress
ex: MYSERVER\SQLExpress

for some reason, puttting "." or(local) as the server instance seems to resolves to an unnamed instance (which seems to be the default one).

Hope this helps

Thanks Bizbu - Cheers for your post; helped me out.

The answer is ".\(<- back slash)sqlexpress", isn't it?
Thank you for your taking time.

Yes, You can either put:

1 - (local)\SqlExpress
2 - .\SqlExpress
3 - YOURCOMPUTERNAME\SqlExpress
