I am currently running an NT 4.0 svc pck 6a Server as a signal Domain.
I would like to ad a database server to the domain. I will be installing Windows 2000 Server w/5 CAL’s
My Strategy is two parts:
1)Install the new database server (Win2000 Srvr) as a member server to my NT PDC
2)I am building the new database server (Win2000 Srvr) with two IDE drivers that I would like to mirror

My questions are:
1)Regarding strategy #1 is this doable? If yes
1.1 Can you offer any how-to (step by step?)
1.2 Any insights or pit falls

2)Regarding strategy #2 is this doable? If yes
1.1 Can you offer any how-to (step by step?)
1.2 Any insights or pit falls

Thanks for your help.
I am doing this the best way I know how. Working hard, putting all I have into it, and admitting I don’t know everything.

1. Yes, Windows 2000 Server behaves just fine as a member server in an NT 4 domain - you shouldn't have any problems with that. Just add it to the domain like you would a workstation.

2. Yes it's doable, but I never recommend using IDE drives in a server. If you must use IDE drives, make sure each drive has a channel on the IDE controller all to itself (One drive per IDE cable). This will mean installing an extra controller if you also want a CD-Rom drive. The way IDE works, you can only perform one I/O operation to one device on a channel at a time. Disk Manager in Windows 2000 (Right-click on My Computer, select Manage, Disk Management is in the Storage section) will allow you to set up software mirroring, or you could go with an ATA RAID card to set up hardware mirroring, which may be a good option for you if you need an extra controller anyway.

I don't particularly trust IDE drives or controllers for servers, so I'd be sure to get good tape backups regularly.

What database software are you going to be running? Just how important will this database be to your business and operations? Marc Creviere
