Hey all,

I have a stack of old IDE hard drives I need to go through to find some really old work files. I purchased a USB to IDE converter and have connected to my Vista Ultimate laptop.

Vista recognizes the device and loads the necessary drivers, but I do not see it in Explorer. I then went into Disk Management and the disk is there. However, it is not initialized. When I try to initialize it I get a "Disk is not ready" error.

I've scoured Google, but haven't found my solution. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

The hard drive's file table may corrupted, there may be damage to the file system, the hard drive may be bad etc... and as such cannot be mounted.

Try using GetDataback fro runtime.org to see if there is something recoverable from the HD.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

LOL

I'm running it right now. When in doubt I always revert to GetDataBack.

This application worked wonders for me, even in a RAID configuration, and I believe the paid version (maybe the free version as well - I forget) will actually recover the partition IN PLACE, meaning you don't have to copy the whole partition somewhere else to correct:
