Ok I bought the SL-75DRV5 under the impression that until the VIA KT333A chipset comes out USB 2.0 was not supported as well as AGP 8X. However, a new review on THG states that the SL-75DRV5 mother board does support USB 2.0. Does anyone know which is true?
Some of the KT333 chipset equipt boards do indeed suport USB2.
Like Abits AT7 Max.(which also has built in firewire, six channel audio and digital audio output)Awesome!!!!!!
But the majority of manufactures have not gone for USB2 support and it would appear on the face of it the Soltek SL-75DRV5 is one of them.
KT333 does not support 8X AGP, you are correct in saying that this will be an aditional feature of the new KT333a when it arrives!!
KT333a will be a drop in swop for the manufactures so no major board redesign will be needed, "a" revisions will be out soon just as SIS are about to launch their first 8X AGP graphics chip, AND LIFE GOES ON AT A HEADY PACE!! Martin Just trying to help, sometimes falling short, I am only human after all.
Seems I may have been a little hasty.
Toms Hardware Guide have reviewed 18 motherboards with the KT333 chipset, it DOES NOT have support for USB2 rather the manufactures have been including an additional chip on there motherboards to make it USB2 functional.
They do mention that this Soltek board DOES HAVE USB2 support so it must have the additional chip.
Incidently the Gigabyte GA-7VRXP was voted the BEST KT333 motherboard!!! Soltek somewhere in the middle. Martin
PS, I was correct about the 8X AGP (only on the yet to be released KT333a) Just trying to help, sometimes falling short, I am only human after all.
Fraid NOT!!
This will be a physical replacement of one processor for another at the production stage of the motherboard and cannot be carried out post manufacture.
well not unless you are a blinking genius!! Martin Just trying to help, sometimes falling short, I am only human after all.
USB 2.0 support has been added on many boards via a separate controller chip - what Tomshardware is saying is that Via have not included support in the KT333 chipset.
I know for a fact that the MSI Ultra (RAID version) has a USB 2.0 controller on the motherboard - in fact, it has 2 headers, plus one "legacy" USB 1.0.
The Abit AT7 is restrictive, since it only has 3 PCI slots. Look at their new KX7-333R
The Soltek board has no USB 2.0 controllers, but it probably supports it via an add-on card (you can buy a USB 2.0 card very cheaply). The disadvantage of a card is that you are restricted to the speed of the PCI bus (133Mb/sec). If the controller was included in the Southbridge, then we could expect to see the full potential of USB 2.0 (480Mb/sec).
