greetings!

need some feedbacks and suggestions
what path should i go?

1. installing my dlink di-704 router for internet sharing

2. using winroute as a proxy for internet sharing

what are the advantages/disadvantages or limitations of each setup
what can u say about on speed, security, ease of each setup

Let's start it by me saying:

If you want plain, fast, no frill internet connection sharing then use your dlink.

If your concern is security/controlling/filtering/allowing which user to use the net and what contents to surf. etc etc. then go for winroute(depends on what ver and capabilities).

If you have less than 250 users, then let the router do the work. I will assume your router is capable of handling the dhcp and I would use it for that provided it can hand out the dhcp options for gateway, dns, etc.

The advantage is letting the hardware do the work (harware routing tends to be more reliable). The dissadvantage is being able to monitor internet access the way you can with a proxy and you are limited on how many ip addresses the router will hand out.

thanks for the replies

i went the router way...

i tried setting my network/internet thru my dlink router and working fine. i was using b4 2 lan cards with a proxy to share internet. here's my present cable setup

router wan port -> xdsl modem ethernet port
router port 1 -> server nic1
router port 2 -> port 4 of switch
router port 3 -> comtrol vs2000 ras

here's my router setup

lan ip address - 192.168.0.1
wan type - static ip add
wan ip - 203.x.x.x
wan subnet - 255.255.255.0
wan gateway - 203.x.x.x
primary dns - 202.x.x.x
sec dns - 202.x.x.x
dhcp - enabled
ip pool start - 100
ip pool end - 240
domain name - blank

on my server's nic1
obtain ip auto
obtain dns auto

questions:

should i still connect the cable for the second nic? where?
what will be its ip add/dns/subnet/gateway
i plan to promote this to dc
plan to host our own email/website
we have a registered domain too

any suggestions/feedbacks

Your needs are becoming comlicated:

Let's this one first:) :
You don't need a second Nic removed/disable it. You must have a static ip address for your server (check the manual of your dlink about static/dynamic ip address) and this ip will be the address for the dns option of the router DHCP offering. You don't have yet a dns right, well you must have one when you promote your server to become DC, use DNS forwarders to connect to Internet.

Reminder, don't use your registered domain to be name of your internal domain. Let's say abc.com is your registered domain, use abc.local for the internal. Hopefully somebody will tell you why?

thanks for the reply.

you're right no dns yet. i'm have to do this one at a time to avoid any mistakes.

does it mean that i have to enter a new static ip (public) on my nic? and is this diff from the ip i set-up on my router?

based on my router settings, what den should my settings on the nic? can u tell me why i should not use my registered domain. some dcpromo examples enters not a registered name but no explanations why? can u explain.

i tried these settings and its working fine. is it correct

ip add - 192.168.0.200
subnet - 255.255.255.0
gateway - 192.168.0.1
dns1 - 202.78.97.2
dns2 - 202.78.97.3

Server:
ip add - 192.168.0.200
subnet - 255.255.255.0
gateway - 192.168.0.1
dns - 192.168.0.200
202.78.97.2 -> should be in your dns forwarders
202.78.97.3 -> should be in your dns forwarders

Workstation:
IP add : 192.168.0.xxx
subnet - 255.255.255.0
gateway - 192.168.0.1
dhcp - 192.168.0.1
dns - 192.168.0.200

Ok this is the thread950-602154 you're looking.

You can also install DNS now and dcpromo later.
