Hi,

I’ve set up a hard wired peer to peer network comprised of 9 computers. Six of these have Windows XP Pro while the three others use Windows 98.
One of the XP Pro computers acts as a server. On this computer I’ve disabled simplified sharing.
All of the computers in the network have internet access through the “server” computer.
The “server” computer has a mapped network drive to which I wish 3 of the other XP Pro computers to have full access.

Here are my problems:
1. Contrary to what I wish, all the computers in the network have full access to the mapped drive. Other than the 3 mentioned above, I would like the network computers to be limited to internet access and the Shared Documents Folder that the other computers on the network make available.

2. I would like to give access to a specific folder on the “server” computer to only one other XP Pro computer. In fact that folder would be a sub folder of the mapped network drive.

I presently have only one group for all the computers.

I’ve read up on sharing etc… but I can’t seem to grasp the steps that are required to accomplish this.

I hope someone can make sense of this. As clear as it seems in my head I can’t describe it as clearly as I would have liked.

Focus on the Users, not the Groups in a Workgroup setting.

You control access rights to the Shares by username when you create or edit the share permissions.

To get the greatest control, you need to convert the hard disk drive on your XP "server" to NTFS. This allows you to set or remove the greatest number of rights to a drive share, folder or even file.

The groups you will have to exert some control over are the Groups 'Everyone' and 'Guest.'

For the "server", see:
For the client workstations, to confine their "shares" to only the Shared Files folder, see:
