Hi there,

I'm trying to configure a freeradius server on my suse linux machine. I'm a newbie and I'm having a lot of trouble searching for good documentation and I am quite stuck at the moment. I want to use the freeradius server for authentication and billing for a hotspot server.
Does anybody know what I need to configure on my radius server?
Right now I configurred the clients.conf file(I'm not quite shure if I need to type in a nastype or if so what nastype my client is)
I also tried to configure some users in the users file.
I've also configurred the authentication port number in the radiusd.conf file.
But i CAN#T get any connection between my radius client and the server.

Any help would be appreciated,
busche

This is highly specialized work that requires a number of inputs and equipment considerations.

I think you'll do better at the FreeRadius website and its mailing lists....

YES, you MUST Define the nastype and the dictionary and the user authentication mechanism, and the response strings, and whether you accept PAP/CHAP and ...........................

Thank's a lot for your info. I will try to work on that.

The problem with a lot of open-source applications is that they have suffered from feature creep. They have been enhanced and enhanced to within an inch of their lives.

The good thing about this is that it probably will do whatever you want it to do.

The bad thing is that you have to wade through tons and tons of configuration options to try to figure out how to make it do what you want it to do.

My suggestion is to buy the O'Reilly book "Radius" by Jonathan Hassell (ISBN 0-596-00322-6). He describes why you would use radius and gives you the basics of how to configure FreeRadius.

You still have to dig through the config files, play with it, run it in debug mode, and interpert the debug output. But at least the book gives you a basis to ask intellegent questions on the mailing list.

Hi,
thank's for your advice. I will probably do what you said for my future projects but at the moment I'm a little bit under pressure(should have been done yesterday:) ).
I tried the mailing list and I will keep on working through all the doc files hoping for an enlightenment.
Today I figurred out that I have to include special dictionaries(/usr/../freeradius/dictionary.cisco(.bbsm) but this was still not the end.

You might find some more illuminating information on the ICRadius website. The ICRadius team mostly moved their focus to the FreeRADIUS development effort, but the documentation concerning ICRadius applies (often in spirit) to what you need to do to setup a good, linux RADIUS server. I still use ICRadius
