Hi Guys,

Firstly, I am a newbie. So apologies if this is a silly question which does not seem to be clarified anywhere I have looked.

We have recently took delivery of a Cisco Catalyst 4507R Chassis with the Supervisor Engine II + (WS-X4013+) running Cisco IOS.

I have managed to connect to the terminal port using telnet over a com port, and have a mess around with the CLI on that. What I would like to know is how I would go about configuting an IP address for the management port and manage the switch over the network? We have no VLANS, just a flat LAN

Believe me.. I have tried, but I've almost ran out of hair.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Conf t, interface vlan 1 , give it an unused ip address and mask of your current network , then do a no shut on vlan 1 . If this is truly a flat network and not routed you do not even need a default route . Also while you are at it you should give a password for telnet and a enable password . For a telnet password , conf t , lin vty 0 15 , enter , password XXXXXXX,enter . XXXXX is whatever password you want to make it . Put a timeout on the telnet interface , conf t
lin vty 0 15 exec-timeout 15 ,enter . Type end , this takes you back to the command line . Type write mem . To set a enable password , type conf t , enter . Enable secret XXXXX where XXXXX is the password of your choice . Type end , hit enter . Type write mem .

Thanks vipergg. I have done as you suggested and assigned the correct IP and subnet mask to interface VLAN 1. I forgot to mention we have 2 subnets here.. 201.44.144.x and 201.44.100.x, how do I go about setting the default router on this thing? I am still unable to connect to the switch over the network, nor am I able to get a response if I ping it (assuming it is set to respond to pings) from a 201.44.100.x address (the same subnet that the switch is on. Maybe I am plugging this thing in wrongly.. on the supervisor module there are two ports.. console and 'Mgmt 10/100', have tried with both these connected and still no joy :-(

Think I'll go and cry somewhere...

Ok, been playing around with it some more.

Set the global IP configuration to use default-gateway 201.44.100.1 (the cisco router for that subnet) However, I am not sure what to enter for the default-network - would this be 255.255.255.0 ? Or something else? I currently have this set at 201.44.100.1 (same as default gateway). Now I am able to ping the switch and access the http interface from any computer on the 201.44.100.x domain but not from any computers on the 201.44.144.x domain. We have the same cisco router which sits between these subnets and routes between the two...

Half way, at least

Ok I'll take a stab , originally you said you had no vlans and now you say their are two subnets and possibly a router involved . Does this 4500 hook to a cisco router and how many connections to the router do you have ?
router---(trunk vlan1&2)---> 4500 . If you have 2 subnets and you need to route between them , you will either need 2 connections to the router or the router must have the ability to trunk both subnets down one connection . On the 4500 create 2 vlans , conf t vlan 1 , enter . Conf t , vlan 2 , enter . The rest of the ports on the switch must be set into the correct vlan for whatever subnet you decide to assign them . The rest depends on where the layer3 routing is taking place , either on a router hooked to the 4500 or this 4500 has the ability to route itself . without knowing the network topology it's hard to go much further.

Hi,

At the moment, I have just plugged one of the ethernet ports on the switch blade to a port on a bog standard 3com switch (which is also located on the 201.44.100.x subnet) for testing. There is just the one cisco router which routes between the 144.x and 100.x subnet - so there are 2 ethernet connections on the router itself. Each of these are connected to a switch on that subnet, and all the other switches are just daisy-chained off the first switch (hope this makes sense).

My PC is on the 144.x subnet and I can ping all the other switches which are on the 100.x subnet, just not the chassis' management port :(

If you have the 4500 just plugged into a 3 com located on the 201.44.100 subnet then you wouldn't be able to talk to the other subnet on the 4500 because it has no path to the other subnet , you would need to run another cable from the vlan on the 4500 to whatever switch feeds the 201.44.144 subnet , then you would have a path back to the router and it should route between the subnets . You can't use either port on the supervisor card as a feed use a port on one of the slots.

PS seeing that you have 2 subnets , have you put your default route on the 4500 so it knows how to get back to the router , it should point to the router interface address . The ip default gateway will not work on this, need a static route , ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 (router interface address) . You can get rid of the default gateway .
