Configuration of Cisco 2950 Switch

This is the first time I've tried to setup a Cisco switch. I got a new one in and went through the initial configuration and gave the switch a static ip address in the default VLAN1, but I can't bring any of the interfaces up! All the interfaces are shut down. When i go into configuration to do "no shutdown" on an interface, nothing changes. If i do "shutdown" it changes the status of the interface to "administratively down". And then when I do "no shutdown" again it changes the status to "down". What am i missing? Also VLAN1 and all the interfaces show "line protocol is down". I'm sure i'm doing something stupid...

Do you have something connected to the ports? They will stay down until physically connected.

I had one port hooked into another existing 2950 switch (which was configured by someone else and is working fine and connected to the network)...but no link light on either port on either switch...I assumed it was the configuration of my switch that was causing the problem. I didn't know the interfaces wouldn't show as "up" unless the were physically connected. Do i need to configure something on the port on the existing switch to connect it to my switch?

If you are cabling switch to switch, you need a cross-over cable, not a straight thru cat 5... Out of the box, both switches should light up the link led and pass data if connected to each other with a crossover... No extra config should be needed...

I knew I was doing something stupid...thanks for all your help.
