Upon connecting to the internet with my laptop (XP Pro Oper System), the connection to the internet is lost and the computer shuts down after about 2 minutes.

I have erased the hard drive and reinstalled most of the software. Also, installed McAfee firewall/Virus software.
Loaded PeoplePCOnline ISP also.

Still, the problem persists.

Any ideas as to what the problem is? Is this indicative of a bad hard drive? bad modem? Do I need to buy a USB modem?

Thanks in advance.

If the computer runs stable without an internet connection you are probably looking at your modem drivers.

This could be some kind of Worm. What version of XP are you using? Do yo have all of the updates, and support packs installed?

Some software you get from these ISP's and the Virus Software may not be up to date enough to work with windows if you do any security updates. When XP did Support Pack 2 and realeased it, it caused software that was not up to date to fail.

Normally you need XP, then the support packs, then the security updates. Sometimes you can boot in SAFE MODE with Network Support, download the updates from your ISP, then reboot. Either that or download the updates and then go to system restore and go back to a previous time when the system worked. However, you formatted the harddrive. That is bad news for XP.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

I just purchased a USB modem and will try to connect.

Also, will download the XP support packs and security updates.

I also installed the McAfee 2007 Antivirus/Antispyware/firewall software product. I would think that this software is updated. However, it may not be.

Will post back my results.

If all else fails just load the OS and run updates. Don't worry about the antivirus until you got your system running smoothly. Get all the hardware drives working before your proceed. If you could create an image of the system that would probably save you more time in the future.
