This computer was new in box when purchased in May 2000. Although it isn't "new technology" it's a "Future Power" unit, Celeron 333MHZ 4.3HD, 64mb sdram. it worked fine, nothing seemed wrong until I tried to turn it on yesterday and there's nothing! Checked the switch, it's ok, replaced the power supply (just in case) still nothing. tried other power outlets, nothing. When I opened the case to check it out, i found a jumper loose in the case, but do not have a clue where it came from. Would that cause a power problem?
The company I purchased it from is not local, or I would just take it to them for repair/service.

What kind of power switch do you have. Main power on back of PS or Main power on front of machine. If you have ATX machine then power is controlled by jumper from m/b to an activate switch on the front. And jumper will connect to 2 pins on the M/B.
How is power supply connected to M/B. Two connectors of 6 wires each or one connector of 8x2. If 8x2 then you have ATX and jumper is significant. If 2-6 wire connectors you have AT style and power supply may be shorted by something on the board or disk drives or whatever else is connected .
If AT, then fan blades should move when power is applied, even with a short somewhere. Just move, not run. Tries to start up, but power supply then crowbars and shuts down.
Hope this isn't confusing, and that it helps.
Ed Fair
efair@atlnet.com

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.
Hi,
Two things: 1- Check the little cable (in a bunch of cable all clipped together) for the Power switch, where's almost all the jumpers are right beside eah other.. You must have the book of the motherboard, so check the schematic. If not, at 90% of the time, it's written right under the pins. Check the cable if it's there...

2- You'll need to change your motherboard. In the shutdown process, maybe a chip or resistor burnt..! Yep, we've seen that too.. So your motherboard can be dead..

Ben_Cool
Ben_Cool
ben_cool@hotmail.com

Thanks for the advice. Will follow it and let you know.
Sorry I forgot to add that this unit is an ATX machine.
I didn't check to see if the fan blades were trying to move, but I will. Appreciate it,guys.
Regards,
theenglands@excite.com

Try tracing the wires. Maybe using colors. If they connect to the power on switch on the front of the box you've found the problem. And the two pins thet the switch connects to can be just about anywhere on the M/B.
Ed Fair
efair@atlnet.com

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.
Here is a thought that you probably already checked, is the power switch on the back of the power supply on? The switch just above the power cord port....

If that is on, try cracking open the power supply and checking to see if the fuse is burnt, that happened in a couple of computers that I worked on....

Good luck...
Troy Williams B.Eng.
fenris@hotmail.com
