I have a computer that is running win98SE i believe I have a virus: I have Norton Aniti Virus 2002 and have most up to date virus definitions.
Symptoms: the help files keep opening up in all programs that I have open.
It moves from one harddrive to another in your computer. I tried to add another harddrive and when I installed windows on it the problem was still there.
It won't let me format the hard drive. It says bad command or file name format c:\ is what I typed at the DOS prompt.
I think it also infects the bios because while in DOS mode it kept repeating what you typed once you got to the next line.
Anyone heard of a virus with these symptoms. I have a feeling it is also a backdoor type virus.

I could be wrong, but it does not sound like a virus. I have not heard of a virus that will do this.

When you were in DOS, did you get there by booting to a clean boot disk? If so, then no virus was running at the time.

As for the format, I do not know--if you booted to a floppy with Format on it, then you should be able to type format c: at the A: prompt--HOWEVER format c:\ should give you an error about a paramater not being correct (because you do not need the backslash at the end)

My guess? Bad keyboard or keyboard controller. F1 will bring up help menus, and F3 will repeat your last command in DOS. Is is possible that your keyboard is on the fritz? You might try another one for good measure! Mudskipper

Groucho said it best- "A four year-old child could understand this! Quick! Run out and find me a four year-old child: I can't make heads nor tails out of this!"

Thanks I will try that and let you know

Leave the backslash off the format command and try it again.
To get help on format...type format(space)/? and hit enter...it'll return the correct syntax and switches to use to complete it.
The help files problem may be bad keyboard or sticky F1 key.

Ya, I vote that the keyboard is the problem. Stop spilling your Coke on it.

Thanks all the keyboard was the problem
