My Computer is a dell pen 3 running windows xp pro when i use the computer and shut it down for the night and go back next day it is already restarted.( it restarts itself) Can you please help me as to how i can fix this problem.
THank you very much.

. check the BIOS for autostart entries, many Dells have a BIOS schedule you can enable to autostart the machine
. disable, if available, a wake on ring feature, a wake on event 47 feature, and a wake on lan feature.

And if that still fails...

Open the registry and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon

Look for the entry "PowerdownAfterShutdown" and change the value to 1

Dollar,

If it was a pure shutdown style issue, the registry change you suggested is a good one. Whutdown issues are such that there are too many complications to list here. Do a site search on the keyword 'shutdown.'

But spontaneous startups are a different fish. The original poster indicated a Dell computer, which has a BIOS-based scheduler for restarting the machine, and offers Wake-on Events for several events as others noted above.

I will throw my two cents into the pot: I have seen this with cheap power strip/power protectors where the MOVs (Metal Oxide Resistors) have died. Throw out the power strip/"surge protector" device, and plug into the Mains or replace the device.

Any guess is sort of wild and wooly. But the first thing is to look at the BIOS settings.
