Hey,

I was searching for a program that would take a movie file and make into an ISO to copy to a DVD. In short, I ended up on a malicious site automatically downloading a trojan virus. I dont remember the name, I hit clean on the AVG protection alert and it 'cleaned' the file.
Soon after, the computer begain to run slow. Well, actually froze up when trying to open instant messenger. I reboot. The computer locks up just before I should see the "windows xp" loading logo.

I already attempted to use the recovery cd. I see "Press any key to boot from CD..." and hit a key, the cd spins up but then eventually stops and I am frozen. Anything left here to try? Perhaps taking the drive to another pc?

thanks!

do you have an anti-virus recovery disk set.... If you have perhaps SAV you should have created a recovery disk set to allow you to recover form such an issue.

You could create a start up disk off another machine and try to start up the infected one so to clean....

A virus aimed at pirates? Is there no honor among thieves? [swords]

Or do you think the MPAA set up the site as a sting? Cheaper and more effective than litigation.

Nope no disc to recover. >;o

two possibilities:

1.) as you mentioned, move the drive to another PC, best in an USB enclosure, then have the host scan the drive fully and remove any viral presences...

2.) Format drive and do a fresh install, this way you know that the 'nasty bugger' is totally gone...

about the other problem: a program that converts movies into DVD's or Video CD's...

1.) pay for Nero, it has a great encoder/recoder for that...

2.) use VLC to do it, it is free and here is the Tutorial

3.) check this out aswell:

I enabled s.m.a.r.t. detection in the setup, when I saved the settings and exit said there is a hdd problem and a failure may be imminent. Will get a new hdd, Thanks all!
