Basically, I have absoutely no idea what is going on. I'll be using my computer and all of a sudden, it will shut off. When I go to turn it back on, it won't work - I get a surge of power through the board, but that's it. (the LEDs flash, but computer does not turn on). After waiting for x minutes (different each time), I can turn it on again.

This will repeat itself sooner each time. It was a week between the first and second times, now it's approx 2 days or less. This morning, it wouldn't even get passed the CDRom detection, and it would shut off again.

My best guess is that it's either the CPU or motherboard, because the technician *claims* that he changed the power supply for me. He couldn't even find a problem with the computer, after leaving it on for 2 days straight.

By the way, i'm running an intel celeron 800mhz with 384 ram.

What, other than my intuition, could be causing this problem?

probably a faulty motherboard, or maybe some components.
i have experienced this on an abit SE6, changing the motherboard fixed the problem.

i think it can have something to do with not using a grounded power outlet, or irregular power supply

dont't take this as an expert opinion, it's just what i've experienced

Try disconnecting power and ribbon cables to all the drives and peripherals. Remove all cards from the motherboard except video. Make sure power connections to the motherboard are tight and secure. Now check to see if the motherboard will power up to give POST etc. Maybe a device is drawing excessive current...? Also worth checking that your ON/OFF switch (I'm assuming ATX here) isn't locking up in the "ON" position - check this with a multimeter, or pull its connection off the mobo immediately after starting. And finally, make sure your mains lead is a good tight fit into the PSU connector.
