I've had this problem ever since I installed Win 2003 Server on my computer. After a few minutes I will hear this semi-high-pitched noise from the tower that sounds like a fan starting to spin up at a high rate. Then the computer locks up and nothing will loosen it up except a hard reboot (holding down the power button). It's happened on 3 different HD now, so I'm fairly certain it's not the HD going bad. CPU temp is at 84F. Is that too hot? What else could be the problem?

850Mhz AMD Duron
248 MB SDRAM
80 GB IBM Deskstar 7500RPM 2MB cache
ATI Rage 32MB
300w PS
SB Live 5.1 soundcard
Win 2003 Server Eval with all the updates

Sounds like your machine might be overheating. The times i've seen win2k or 2003 freeze up totally were cause cpu fans were dead and the machine overheated. That high pitched noise might be the motherboard warning about heat.

I put a larger Volcano Fan on the CPU and it hasn't happened yet. I'll let you know if anything happens. Thanks!

It happened again. The funny thing is that if I leave it on the Login screen ("Press ctl+alt+del to Logon") it doesn't happen. It will stay there forever. Then when I log in, it take about 15 minutes of being idle, and then whammo! It locks up. Any suggestions?
