Computer hiccuping (Video or processor??)

I have a Pent 3 733 copperchip
384 mb ram, ati 64ddr radion video card
running win98se

Recently my computer has been running into a ugly problem.

I would be playing a video game like a nascar 4 and after a few minutes it slows way down the video on the screen starts
to fall behind a frame or two and it looks like it skips 4 or 5 frames at a time.

Sometimes 2 minutes later it back to normal.

I would think that is was a problem with the game but happens even on easy games like snood (

is a basic game as it comes.

What do I look into for the answer.

PS the os was just reinstalled about a month and a half ago.

Hi;

Sounds like you could use some extra cooling. Something is getting hot, processor or video card. If your video card is on an AGP slot, try keeping the PCI slot just below it empty. This helps air flow around the video card. Try running with case open and see if that helps.

Should i install extra cooling to the case or should i look to increase the GPU fan size.
the next slot to the agp slot is full they are all full.

Post a complete list from your MSCONFIG / STARTUP list.

I have tried reinstalling new ATI drivers from rave3d.com
that were released feb 2, 2002. Still have problems

I have opened up the case and given the GPU and cpu a good cleaning with a air can. and left the sides off of the tower
and it isn't doing it yet. But not that much time has been spent on the machine. Kids take to much time.

Other software ??????

Mcafee virus
Wingman profile (ff steering)
hammerhead fx profile (gamepad)
ati profiler
scanner monitor (USB canon scanner software put there monitor into msconfig.

Onboard sound in games can really use up a lot of processing power, if you have onboard sound and not a seperate sound card it may well be worth buying a cheap PCI sound card to take the strain off the CPU, something like a cheap Creative 128 would be fine.
See if you can borrow one off a friend to check if it helps!
Also just a note* have you got some heat transfer paste between your processors and heatsink, it is a must for system stability.
A top exhaust fan would also help but shouldn't really be necessary on a Pentium 733 unless you live in a warm climate? Martin Vote if you found this post helpful please!!

Has anybody have a good link to find a cpu temperature
program so i can monitor it???

I sure hope im barking up the right tree.???
